Gold Loan Calculator
A gold loan is secured against jewellery you pledge, which makes it one of the fastest and lower-cost ways to raise money at short notice. Lenders advance a percentage of the gold's assessed value, and regulatory guidance caps that loan-to-value ratio at 75% for the pledged gold.

How each year splits between interest and principal. Early years are mostly interest, which is why prepaying early saves so much more than prepaying late.

How the loan amount is worked out
The lender assesses the net weight of gold after excluding stones, and values it at the prevailing rate for its purity, usually converted to a 22-carat equivalent. The loan is a percentage of that value, subject to the 75% ceiling. Jewellery with significant stone weight or lower purity therefore yields less than the gross weight suggests. Making charges and design carry no value for this purpose.
Repayment structures differ from other loans
Gold loans are offered in several formats: a standard EMI, interest-only servicing with the principal due as a bullet at maturity, or full repayment of principal and interest at the end. The bullet options keep monthly outgo low but require discipline, because the full principal falls due on a fixed date. Choose the structure against your actual cash flow rather than the lowest monthly figure.
Why the rate is low and the risk is specific
Because the lender physically holds the collateral, gold loan rates sit far below personal loans - typically 9% to 18% depending on the lender and scheme, against 10% to 22% unsecured. The specific risk is that a fall in gold prices can trigger a margin call requiring you to pledge more gold or part-pay, and default leads to auction of the jewellery after the statutory notice. Family jewellery has a value beyond its assessed weight, which is worth weighing before pledging it.
What to check before pledging
Confirm the lender's storage and insurance arrangements, the exact per-gram rate applied, the purity assessment method, and whether any charges apply on early closure. Get the pledge receipt listing each item with its weight and description. Non-bank lenders often disburse faster; banks are usually cheaper. For amounts that a bank will process within your timeline, the bank is generally the better economics.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on purity and the prevailing gold rate. At an illustrative 22-carat rate of 7,000 per gram, 100 grams of net gold assesses at about 7 lakh, and at the 75% ceiling the loan would be about 5.25 lakh. Net weight excludes stones, so the figure is calculated on the gold content rather than the gross weight of the piece.
