Mudra Loan Documents: the checklist, and what actually gets files returned
The standard Mudra file is PAN, Aadhaar, six months of bank statements, business proof in the form of Udyam registration or GST, proof of business address, quotations for anything you are buying, and a short plan showing use of funds and repayment capacity. Above Shishu, most branches expect a current account rather than a savings account. The checklist is the easy part - document mismatch, not missing documents, is the most common reason a Mudra file comes back.
Two things worth being clear about
- There is no such thing as guaranteed approval. The credit guarantee under this scheme protects the lender against a portion of a default. It is not approval for the borrower, and a default still lands on your credit record and is still recovered from you.
- The loan does not come from the government. MUDRA Ltd. refinances lending institutions and the loan is guaranteed under CGFMU. The loan itself comes from a bank, NBFC or MFI, and the sanction decision is that institution's alone.
The checklist
Identity and address: PAN and Aadhaar for the applicant, plus proof of the business address - a rental agreement, utility bill or ownership document. Business proof: Udyam registration is the one branches ask for first, and GST returns where you are registered. Financial: six months of bank statements at minimum, twelve at Kishore and above, plus filed ITRs with computation for Tarun. Purpose: quotations or a proforma invoice for machinery, equipment or a vehicle. And a short written plan covering what the money does and how it is repaid - it does not need to be elaborate, but a file with no stated use of funds invites questions.
Mismatch is what actually kills files
The single most common cause of a returned Mudra file is not an absent document but two documents that disagree. An address on Aadhaar that does not match the rental agreement. A business name on the Udyam certificate that differs from the one on the GST registration or the bank account. A stated turnover that the statements do not support. Each of these is trivially fixable before submission and expensive to fix after, because in most branches a returned file goes to the back of the queue rather than being corrected in place. Read your own documents against each other before you submit them.
Udyam registration
It is not formally mandatory in every case, but in practice it is the first thing most branches ask for, and it classifies the enterprise cleanly as micro. It is free and can be completed online. Applying without it is possible and makes the conversation harder for no good reason. If you are serious about the loan, get it done first and carry the certificate in the file.
The account type trap
Shishu often runs on a savings account. Kishore and Tarun almost always require a current account, and a file submitted with only a savings account at those levels tends to stall. That said, a branch insisting you open a brand new current account purely to process an application, when you already operate a functioning current account elsewhere, is not a scheme requirement. Ask what the actual objection is.
Field verification
Someone will usually visit. This carries far more weight than applicants expect, and it is the part no checklist prepares you for. The visit is looking for evidence that the enterprise trades: stock, signage, equipment, a person present, customers. A unit that is shut on the day, or that looks dormant, undoes a well-prepared file. If your business keeps irregular hours, say so in advance rather than letting the verification draw its own conclusion.
Frequently Asked Questions
PAN, Aadhaar, six months of bank statements, business proof such as Udyam registration or GST, proof of business address, quotations for anything being purchased, and a short plan showing use of funds and repayment. Kishore and Tarun add filed ITRs, longer statement history and usually a current account.
